The Black is known for its "Warning" sign, golfers sleeping overnight in the parking lot to get a tee time, and very low fees for a championship course.
Bethpage Black became the first municipal golf course to host the Ryder Cup in 2025; Europe won 15-13.

The park grew from the Yoakum family estate, leased to build Lenox Hills Country Club; in the early 1930s the Bethpage Park Authority bought Lenox Hills and neighbouring land, and the Black opened in 1936 as part of the Depression-era public-works project.
Credit for the Black's design is debated between A.W. Tillinghast and park superintendent Joseph Burbeck; its angles and protective cross bunkers are Tillinghast hallmarks.
All five Bethpage courses (Black, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow) start from the same clubhouse area, and together they host over 200,000 rounds a year.
The GCSAA lists red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, red fox, grey squirrels, eastern bluebirds and tree swallows on the course, with pollinator gardens throughout the property.
The Black sits in 1,475-acre Bethpage State Park, which also holds four other 18-hole courses, a polo field, picnic areas and bike paths.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
