Sir Hervey Bruce opened the new 18-hole course on 15 July 1909 by driving the first ball; in the opening medal over 30 players entered but only four cards were returned.

At the 2001 Irish PGA Championship Paul McGinley set the course record of 64 on a calm day; on the windy day before, eventual winner Des Smyth was the only player under par.
The course takes its name from the nearby Mussenden Temple, set high on the cliff edge at the mouth of the River Bann; Islay is visible to the north on a clear day.
The 200-yard par-3 4th, the club's best-known hole, plays to an elevated green with the railway line all down the left and a burn running diagonally across.
The whole course lies between the railway line, the River Bann and the Atlantic.
The par-5 15th, named Homewards, starts with a blind tee shot best played slightly left of centre.
