Severiano Ballesteros inaugurated the Spanish federation's model course on 7 March 2006, saying that calling golf an elitist sport was out of date and that young players training there would one day bring Spain great satisfaction.
The 2018 Open de España at the Centro Nacional broke attendance records with more than 50,000 spectators; the course had earlier staged the 2006 Challenge de España, 2007 Open de España and 2009 Madrid Masters.
Dave Thomas and Green Project built a 6,417-metre (7,018-yard) course with a British links look: heavy rough, no trees, and breezes as a deciding factor.
The last three holes are dominated by a huge lake and the Real Federación Española de Golf headquarters building.
The centre was the first golf course in Spain with Toptracer, and its fully equipped range is billed as the largest Toptracer range in Europe.
A rebuilt irrigation system, studied with the University of Cádiz, waters only the essential playing areas and cut daily water use by more than 45%.
The PGA Tour and DP World Tour weeks at this course since 2017.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
