Sage co-founder Graham Wylie bought the Close House Estate from Newcastle University as a "thank you" for his education and invested £25 million; Lee Westwood opened the Colt course in May 2011.
At the 2017 British Masters, hosted by Lee Westwood and the first European Tour event at Close House, Paul Dunne closed with a 61 to hold off Rory McIlroy for his first European Tour title.
The estate lies close to Hadrian's Wall and Heddon-on-the-Wall, which has the longest unbroken section of the wall, under ten miles from Newcastle.
Scott Macpherson's routing over 170 acres of new land incorporates a Roman fort, ha-ha walls, ancient woodland and the Ice Lake.
Macpherson spent eighteen months studying Harry Colt's designs before planning the course, which is named after Colt.
For the 2017 British Masters the course was renumbered to start on the 5th, so the normal par-3 4th became the 18th, ringed by grandstands and hospitality as an amphitheatre.
The course sits on a south-facing slope above the River Tyne with about 300 feet (91 m) of fall from high point to low point; the par-5 10th climbs almost 500 yards and the 11th and 13th look over the whole Tyne Valley.

A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
