The club staged the 1965 Canada Cup, today's World Cup, which the club says made Spain the centre of world golf and gave the sport a huge boost in the country.
The Sociedad Deportiva Club de Campo, founded in 1930 on land leased from the Crown, was inaugurated in October 1931 with a chalet by architect Gutiérrez Soto; ABC covered it as a social event, and a nine-hole golf course followed a year later.
In 1992 Madrid mayor José María Álvarez del Manzano and Severiano Ballesteros signed the contract to build nine more holes, forming a new course.
The club's 200-plus hectares in the Moncloa-Aravaca district lie a few minutes from the centre of Madrid, alongside facilities for tennis, equestrian, polo, hockey and an Olympic pool with a retractable roof.
The nine "Ballesteros" holes of the Recorrido Amarillo were designed by Seve in the early 1990s and first played in 1993; they are to be updated by José María Olazábal's design firm.
The championship Recorrido Negro was designed by Spanish architect Javier Arana and has hosted the Open de España 11 times and the Open de Madrid nine times.
Since 1984 the club has been run as a mixed public company in which the Ayuntamiento de Madrid holds 51%, after the city exercised its rights over part of the land.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
