The course opened in 1959 with an inaugural round that featured Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. A year later President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated the club.
The club names Andy Williams, Clint Eastwood and Frank Capra as members, and Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason as guests.
La Quinta CC first joined the Bob Hope tournament from 1964 to 1968, replacing Tamarisk. It alternated with Eldorado from 1987 to 1989 and then with Tamarisk in a one-year-on, two-years-off pattern from 1990 to 2003, before returning to the rotation in 2010 in place of Bermuda Dunes.
The short par-3 7th has a waterfall right of the green that empties into a small lake in front of it.
The par-5 11th plays like the letter "S" to a three-tiered green, with a fairway bunker guarding the approach.
From the 18th tee the view takes in the fairway, the lake, the clubhouse and the Santa Rosa Mountains behind.
The club's tee sets include ones named "Roadrunner" and "Kirk" alongside Classic, Long, Middle, Combo and Forward.
The club says the course is kept to architect Lawrence M. Hughes's goal of the "purest and best quality of play"; for the tournament its greens are overseeded with Poa trivialis and ryegrass, and water comes from the Colorado River and wells.
