W.C. Fownes Jr. would drop a ball at the back of the 2nd green; if it did not roll off the front, he asked the grounds crew why the greens were so slow.
Oakmont is the only course Henry Fownes ever designed; thousands of trees were later removed to restore its open look.

During a 1945 War Bonds exhibition, Sam Snead found an open line beyond the right fairway bunker on the 7th; club president W.C. Fownes Jr. had the grounds crew work through the night to install a bunker on that line, and Snead found it off the tee the next day.
The Church Pews bunker runs along the left of the par-4 3rd and also borders the left side of the par-5 4th, which plays along its opposite side.
The 9th green, framed by the clubhouse, is connected to the club's practice putting green.
The 8th measures 289 yards, one of the longest par 3s in the world; the 16th is a 236-yard par 3 with a trench bunker down its left side.
The course has no water hazards; its defence is 168 bunkers covering 330,000 square feet and ditches that cross or line several holes.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
