The course sits just under 6,000 feet. Its superintendent says frost can come in any summer month and temperatures can swing 50 degrees.

Before the 2025 Barracuda Championship, ice damage over the winter killed much of the Poa on some greens, and more than 10,000 sq ft of bentgrass tees had to be re-sodded.

The Reno-Tahoe Open, later the Barracuda Championship, was played at Montrêux outside Reno, Nevada, until it moved west in 2020 to Old Greenwood in Truckee, California. From 2022 it was co-sanctioned with the European Tour, and it was not on the 2026 PGA TOUR schedule.
The par-3 7th has a Redan-style green abutting a lake on the left, so shots are played in from the front right and the contours feed the ball toward back-left pins.
On the long uphill par-4 9th a pair of pine trees stands in the right-centre of the fairway, blocking approaches from drives hit right.
The course is cut through 600 acres of towering Ponderosa pines over rolling Sierra Nevada terrain, with views of the surrounding peaks.

Most of Nicklaus's greens here have narrow entrances, the majority favouring a left-side entry point, with steep-faced bunkers penalising a mis-clubbed approach.
