Jack Nicklaus redesigned the Champion in 2014 and built "The Bear Trap", a three-hole stretch the club calls "one of the toughest stretches in golf".
The Champion hosted the 1983 Ryder Cup, which the United States won 14.5-13.5 over Europe.
No. 6 plays as a par 5 in regular play but as a par 4 for the Cognizant Classic.
The resort calls the Champion Course "The Champ"; a New York Times line it quotes describes it as "7,045 yards of venom, a king cobra of a course".
Golfers who finish the Bear Trap (holes 15-17) traditionally visit and photograph the Bear Trap statue.
Both Bear Trap par 3s carry water: the 15th has water front, right and long of a diagonal green, and the downhill 17th has a green that slopes toward the hazard; the club warns the 15th can swing three clubs with the wind.

On the par-5 3rd a lone palm tree on the right, about 100 yards from the centre of the green, serves as the target for the layup.
For the 2025 tournament the fairways and tees were overseeded for the first time since 2014; before that only the rough was, over the underlying bermudagrass.
