American Joseph McMicking chose this corner of southern Spain in the early 1960s to build Sotogrande, and founded the golf club in 1964 as the backbone of the development; King Juan Carlos I granted it the Royal title in 1994.
The club counts Roberto de Vicenzo, Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, Sergio García, Pádraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy among the winners on its course.
Inaugurated in 1964, Sotogrande was Robert Trent Jones's first course in Europe; in his 1988 book "Golf's Magnificent Challenge" he listed it among his five favourites of the 500-plus he designed.
Of the course's roughly one hundred bunkers, 69 sit around the elevated, subtly shaped and fast greens, which the club says hold most of the difficulty.
The course lies about 150 metres from the Mediterranean, planted with a mix of cork oaks, pines and palms.
The PGA Tour and DP World Tour weeks at this course since 2017.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
The clubhouse is drawn by GNN from reference photographs; the photographs stay private.
