In the Saturday fourballs of the 1997 Ryder Cup, Ignacio Garrido played a bunker shot at 17 that Olazábal said the best specialist couldn't repeat in a hundred tries, then holed the putt; the Spaniards halved the hole and the match against Mickelson and Lehman, and Europe retained the Cup on the same green when Brad Faxon missed a ten-footer against Langer.
Bolivian tin heir Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, retired to Sotogrande, was urged by banker Paul Jeanty to buy the Las Aves course; he bought it with a consortium in 1984, had Robert Trent Jones redesign it, and renamed it Valderrama after the original finca.

After Spain lost the 1993 Ryder Cup to The Belfry on Lord Derby's casting vote, Valderrama lodged its own bid for 1997 against the Spanish federation's preferred Real Club de Madrid and Seve's Novo Sancti Petri, and won the match.
Before the 2016 Open de España, France's Jacquelin, Lévy, Havret and Wattel played the 500-yard fourth as a relay in 34.87 seconds, setting the Guinness record for the fastest hole by a team of four.

Seve Ballesteros redesigned the par-5 17th into a natural amphitheatre for about 7,000 spectators, its green framed by bougainvillea-covered gabion walls; it was the 8th hole of the old Las Aves layout.
After buying the course, Jaime Ortiz-Patiño had the front and back nines swapped so the more testing holes formed the finish.
Valderrama has held Audubon environmental certification since 1991 and the club describes the course as a wildlife sanctuary.
The 1997 Ryder Cup at Valderrama was the first held outside the British Isles and the United States.
