Founded in 1891, Shinnecock is the oldest incorporated golf club in the US and one of the five founding clubs of the USGA; it hosted the second U.S. Open in 1896.
The 1892 clubhouse was designed by the firm McKim, Mead and White and underwent a major restoration completed in 2016.
In the final round of the 2004 U.S. Open the 7th green became so firm that no one could keep a ball on it, and the USGA had to water the green between groups.

The 519-yard par-4 14th is named for its dogleg and for Charlie Thom, Shinnecock's head professional for 55 years, whose pro shop stood near the 14th tee.

The par-4 9th is named for Scotland's highest mountain and plays steeply uphill to a green perched over broken ground.
The 187-yard par-3 7th is a Redan whose green slopes from front right to back left, with the prevailing wind from the right; the usual play feeds the ball off the slope.

The only water hazard on the course is a pond short and right of the 6th green, which is why that hole is called Pond.

The highest point on the course is the 12th tee at 70 feet above sea level; the lowest is the 6th fairway at 2 feet.

A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
