At his own 1998 Greg Norman Classic, Greg Norman splashed three long irons into the lake fronting the 14th green on the way to a 12, as recalled by course architect Mike Clayton.
The 1968 Mascot freeway closed the original course and forced a von Hagge redesign; seven of the front-nine holes now play on the 'other side' of the airport-to-city road.

The lake that gives the club its name was part of Sydney's old water supply, and the 1928 founders set out to make it part of the course's strategy.

Architect Mike Clayton notes The Lakes is one of very few Australian courses where natural water is in play, the dominant hazard at the opening hole and all three back-nine par 5s.
The club's course tour says seaside winds are an almost constant presence over the course's rolling Sydney dunes, so the wide fairways leave the golfer to work out where to play.
The club lists wind, 97 bunkers and sandy wastelands among the course's features; under its 1928 terms it also had to build a public course on adjoining land, which became Eastlake.

The club's hole notes say the 339 m 4th is organised almost exactly like the famous 11th at Royal Adelaide, with a near-identical carry across broken sandy waste built partly to take driver out of the player's hands.

The rebuilt 14th green comes all the way to the lake and is the biggest and wildest on the course; driving left near the water earns a level stance and a shorter approach.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
