Harding Park declined so far that during the 1998 U.S. Open at nearby Olympic Club it was used as a parking lot. A restoration led by former USGA president Sandy Tatum brought it back, and it hosted the 2020 PGA Championship.
The course is named after President Warren G. Harding and opened on July 18, 1925, on the shores of Lake Merced. It was designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, who also designed the nearby Olympic Club Lake Course.
After the city agreed to let Arnold Palmer Golf Management renovate and run Harding Park, opponents argued it would privatise a municipal course and Palmer withdrew. Funding from California's Proposition 12 (2000) settled the dispute, and a $16 million, 15-month restoration reopened the course on August 22, 2003.

The city championship, inaugurated in 1917, is billed by the club as the country's oldest municipal golf tournament; it is played over TPC Harding Park and Lincoln Park, two of San Francisco's municipal courses.

The property also holds the nine-hole Fleming course, upgraded during the 2002-03 restoration, and has been home to The First Tee of San Francisco since 2004.

The 2002-03 restoration kept Willie Watson and Sam Whiting's 1925 routing but stretched the course from 6,743 yards to nearly 7,200 for tour play.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
