Stories
"Blown up with dynamite"
The original TPC Avenel was heavily criticised; Greg Norman said the par-3 9th should be "blown up with dynamite." The 2008 redesign rebuilt it with a new green on a hill.
The course crosses the Rock Run Stream Valley, one of the main tributaries of the Potomac River; the 2007-09 rebuild expanded and cleaned up Rock Run Creek.
The rebuilt par-70 layout pairs bentgrass tees, fairways and greens and fescue roughs with what the club calls Mid-Atlantic and Scottish-style bunkering.
The rebuild merged the old 10th and 11th into one long par-5 10th that plays around the restored creek, and replaced the old par-5 13th with an uphill par-3 12th and a short par-4 13th.
Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
