The Cheltenham course opened on 14 May 1927 when Prime Minister Stanley Bruce struck the opening ball before a crowd of about 1,000; Bruce later became the first Australian captain of the R&A.

Five-time Open champion Peter Thomson joined Victoria in 1947 and remained a member until his death; a sculpture of him in full flight overlooks the course.
The course's high point near the 12th tee, Battery Point, was kept for golf and made the meeting point of six of the most interesting holes; the clubhouse was put on the eastern side, nearer Cheltenham station, so it would not take that land.

The club says Jack Nicklaus was first called the Golden Bear on his first visit to Victoria, by golf writer and member Don Lawrence; a silver salver Nicklaus later inscribed to Lawrence is displayed in the members' bar.

The club says its par-5 9th lays claim to being the longest hole in women's competition golf in the world.
The clubhouse terrace is dedicated to member Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, and a small plaque marks Doug Bachli's 1954 British Amateur, the first by an Australian.
