During the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic the club served as a temporary hospital. The clubhouse burned down in 1924 and was rebuilt the following year.
The 2022 BMW Championship on the South Course was the PGA TOUR's first event in Delaware.

When the club relocated in the 1950s it hired Robert Trent Jones Sr. to design the South Course, which opened in 1959 and plays over 7,500 yards from the championship tees.

The club's original course, where it hosted the 1913 U.S. Women's Amateur, is now known as the "Old Course"; the 1962 Kirk Road complex gave the club two championship courses.

At the 2022 BMW Championship any player who made an ace on the 15th in competition would win a BMW i7 sedan, and the first ace on any hole funded a four-year Evans Scholarship.

Two Wilmington caddies, Owen Griffin (Illinois, 1983) and Dan Walsh, earned Evans Scholarships before the club hosted the BMW Championship, whose proceeds go to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
