Founder Marvin Leonard landed the 1941 U.S. Open for his five-year-old club, and Craig Wood was champion.
In April 1953 a fire destroyed the original clubhouse; a month later the club staged its PGA Tour event using a tent as the clubhouse, and hometown hero Ben Hogan won.
Leonard built Colonial in 1936 with the first bentgrass greens in Texas, and sold the club to its members at cost in December 1942.
Since 1952 Colonial's champions have been awarded a Scottish tartan jacket.
Holes 3, 4 and 5 form the "Horseshoe", a 1,211-yard stretch (as set up in 2011) that produced the three hardest holes relative to par at the 2010 tournament.

The 247-yard par-3 4th had never yielded a hole-in-one in the tournament's first 62 years, USA Today reported in 2011.

Colonial is called Hogan's Alley after Fort Worth's Ben Hogan, who won the club's invitational five times (1946, 1947, 1952, 1953, 1959).

The Wall of Champions, carrying the name of every Colonial invitational winner, made its debut beside the first tee in 1975.
Gil Hanse's 2023 rebuild installed a hydronic cooling system under the new bentgrass greens, alongside 118 acres of new Bermuda sod.

The club says it is the only venue to have hosted a men's U.S. Open (1941), a U.S. Women's Open (1991) and THE PLAYERS (1975).

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
