Construction began on July 28, 1972 and the course was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974 with an exhibition between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf; Nicklaus's 66 stood as the course record until 1979.
Each year the tournament is themed around an honoree chosen by the Captains Club, and Memorial Park along the 1st fairway commemorates every honoree.
Players and patrons are invited to wear yellow in the final round for the Play Yellow campaign, a nod to the yellow shirts Nicklaus wore in honour of Craig Smith, a friend's son who died of bone cancer in 1971.
Nicklaus calls the drivable 14th "one of the best short par-4s in the game" and made no changes to it in the 2020 renovation; water runs up the right and bunkers guard the left.
The GCSAA fact sheet lists 13 water hazards in play on 13 holes, with average fairway widths of 24 yards.
