At the 1956 U.S. Open Ben Hogan missed a 30-inch putt on the 71st hole, ending his bid for a record fifth U.S. Open; Cary Middlecoff won at 281.
USGA executive director Joseph Dey asked that on visiting in 1948; Oak Hill became the only course in America to host all six rotating men's championships.
In the final round of the 2023 PGA Championship, California club professional Michael Block made a hole-in-one on the 155-yard 15th, asking playing partner Rory McIlroy "Rory, did that go in?"; he finished tied for 15th to earn a 2024 PGA Championship spot.
After the club moved to barren Pittsford farmland in 1926, member Dr. John R. Williams raised oaks from acorns collected around the world in his backyard garden; he said he lost count at 75,000 seedlings planted.
Allens Creek crosses or runs beside several East Course holes; it crosses the 1st fairway at 360 yards, the 10th at 350 yards and the par-5 13th at 325 yards, forcing most players to lay up there.
The club hosts an annual four-ball invitational named for Dr. John R. Williams; the club lists its 54th edition.
The 17th is a par 5 for the membership but plays as a long par 4 in championships, with a drive of at least 280 yards needed to see the green.
