Head pro George Jacobus hired a 23-year-old Byron Nelson as his assistant at the 1935 Masters; a plaque by the pro shop marks where Nelson won 55 cents in nickels from caddies by hitting a flagpole 93 yards away with a 3-iron. In 1947 he returned and shot a record 63 on East-Center, including 30 on the East.

The Championship course was first laid out with 4 Center as the 10th hole, but moving players there was so awkward the PGA Tour considered it unsolvable and the 2008 Barclays nearly went elsewhere; superintendent Todd Raisch reordered the holes to make 6 East the 10th, producing a 7,391-yard course.

Ridgewood was rejected for the 2011 U.S. Women's Open in February 2007, partly over its big-media-market location; seven months later the PGA Tour came calling, and the 2008 Barclays was confirmed only six months before it was played.

In the 1950s a Garden State Parkway plan threatened to wipe out 3 and 4 East; the club lost just 1.5 acres. Bergen Community College and a 1948 midget-car racetrack proposal were also fought off.

The Championship course's closing hole, a 470-yard par 4 from the championship tee, is named Gabriel's Horn in the club's yardage book.

The 3rd on the Championship course, a 588-yard par 5 and the club's No. 3 handicap hole, is named Gorilla; every hole in the yardage book carries a name, from Adam (1st) to Tipperary (17th).

Tillinghast's sketches had the Center nine finishing with a par 3 in front of the clubhouse, but members and directors held that no nine should end with a one-shot hole, so 8 Center was created and 9 Center redesigned.

The 1 East tee was moved forward to its present spot after errant drives went into the swimming pool and, once a 1936 clubhouse addition was built toward the tee, through its windows.

The club's Poa annua greens have subtle contours and usually slope one way; superintendent Todd Raisch notes that, as on most Tillinghast courses, a shot short of the green is generally better than one long.

A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
