Bernard Darwin called Harry Colt's West Course, opened in 1926, the "Tiger Course" in Golf Between Two Wars, saying it was "intended to test that rapacious animal to the full".
The West hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup, a fiercely contested match the Americans won 6½-5½.
The 2011 BMW PGA Championship ended in a playoff between world No. 1 Lee Westwood and No. 2 Luke Donald; Westwood's pitch spun back into the new canal at the 18th and Donald won, taking the No. 1 ranking.
After Els's £6.5m renovation Paul Casey said the course had lost its character, and at the 2011 PGA Ian Poulter said, "I don't like this golf course. Period. End of story."; the 18th green was lowered that year.
The West got its nickname at the end of the Second World War: the course had been left to grow wild, and when German prisoners were brought in to clear it an officer reputedly said, "Let this be their Burma Road".
The Army requisitioned the clubhouse at the start of the Second World War and built a labyrinth of underground bunkers; a secret wartime HQ lies deep below it.
The 566-yard par-5 17th has no bunkers; it sweeps left between tall trees with out-of-bounds left, and the blind approach is aimed at a large oak in the distance.
Ernie Els's 2009-10 renovation added a canal-like stream protecting the green of the closing par 5.
The 2016-17 Ernie Els / European Golf Design work installed sub-air systems on every green, the first of their kind in England.

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's tour-course research (profiles, championship history, the tour's visits since 2017, stories, details and course changes, each with its sources). A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
