At the 1950 Open Hermann Tissies took 15 on the 8th; at the same hole Tiger Woods made triple bogey in 1997, while Gene Sarazen (1973) and Ernie Els (2004) made holes-in-one there.
The club was founded in 1878 as a five-hole course after a meeting of golf enthusiasts in a local pub; Charlie Hunter, Keeper of the Green at Prestwick, laid it out and it reached 18 holes by 1884.
Royal patronage was granted in 1978, the centenary year, making Royal Troon the first and last club in Great Britain made Royal under Queen Elizabeth II.
Troon hosted its first Open in 1923, won by Arthur Havers, still the only British man to win an Open at Troon; six of its champions have been American.
The 8th plays 99 to 123 yards, the shortest par 3 on the Open rota; Willie Park Jr named it, saying in Golf Illustrated that the green was "skimmed down to the size of a postage stamp". The green measures 2,635 square feet.

A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. The light in the room is the sun's real position on the last day of a recorded visit.
