Moments

  1. 1949 Open In round two Bradshaw's drive at the 5th came to rest inside a broken beer bottle; unsure of the rule, he played it as it lay, moved it about 25 yards and took a 6.
  2. 1949 Open In the playoff Locke hit a 4-iron from about 200 yards to a couple of feet at the 14th for an eagle 3 while Bradshaw took 6, and Locke won by 12 strokes.
  3. 1950 Open German amateur Herman Tissies took 15 at the 123-yard 8th, the 'Postage Stamp', ricocheting between bunkers.
  4. 1950 Open With hardly any wind all week, Locke missed only two fairways in four rounds and set an Open record 279, the first successful title defence since Walter Hagen in 1929.
  5. 1952 Open On the final morning Locke found the garage holding his clubs locked; a passing milkman drove him to fetch the key and he reached the 1st tee with just enough time to change his shoes.
  6. 1952 Open Fred Daly's six at the 15th ended his chance, and Thomson, six behind at the turn, birdied the 18th for 70 to finish one short.
  7. 1957 Open On the 72nd green Locke moved his marker a putter-head to clear Bruce Crampton's line, forgot to move it back and holed a four-footer from the wrong spot; the committee ruled no advantage was gained.
  8. 1957 Open Switched from Muirfield to St Andrews because of Suez Crisis petrol rationing, it was the first Open with the leaders paired last and the final stages shown live on the BBC.
