What happened at the 1953 Open Championship

On the par-5 6th Hogan drove down the narrow left strip between bunkers and out of bounds in all four rounds - the line now called 'Hogan's Alley'.

In the final round Hogan chipped in from 30 feet for birdie at the 5th, saved par at 17 and birdied 18 for a course-record 68.

No source names a deciding hole; Hogan's final-round birdie at the 5th "changed the trajectory" of a course-record 68 that won by four.

How this was built

Every value is shown as recorded in GNN's The Open data. A value no source confirmed is left out; nothing is estimated. Where sources disagree, the organizer's own record is used.

Data: the-open.json (The Open room's data), with GNN's Open Championship addendum tables L (top ten by round), H (deciding hole), W (final-day weather).
