What happened at the 1940 U.S. Amateur

Chapman, playing his home Winged Foot course, won eight of the last nine holes played and closed out McCullough 11 & 9 on the 27th green, the second-largest final margin to that time.

Weekend golfer Duff McCullough beat former champions Willie Turnesa (3 & 2) and Johnny Fischer (5 & 4) on the same day to reach the semifinals.

Final, Dick Chapman v. Duff McCullough, 11 & 9. McCullough won two of the first three holes with birdies, but Chapman squared by the 5th, was 1 up at nine (35) and 3 up at 18 (71), then won eight of the last nine holes played, ending it on the 27th green; McCullough three-putted three of the last nine greens and was laid a stymie that left him 10 down with 10 to play.

Quarterfinal, Ray Billows v. Bud Ward, 4 & 3. Defending champion Ward sprayed shots into the Winged Foot bunkers from the start while Billows played par or better, reversing Ward's 7 & 5 win over him in the 1939 final.

Round of 16, Duff McCullough v. Willie Turnesa, 3 & 2. McCullough, a weekend golfer from Philadelphia, led from the 9th hole on to beat the 1938 champion, then beat 1936 champion Johnny Fischer 5 & 4 in the afternoon.
