What happened at the 1964 U.S. Amateur
Campbell, 41, won at his 21st attempt, 1 up over fellow West Virginian Ed Tutwiler, who had beaten him in six of seven West Virginia Amateur finals
Defending champion Deane Beman lost 4 & 2 in the first round to Maryland teammate-successor Vernon Novak Jr.
Final, William C. Campbell v. Ed Tutwiler, 1 up. Two West Virginians who had met seven times in the West Virginia Amateur final (Tutwiler won six) met in the 36-hole final; Campbell, 41, in his 21st U.S. Amateur, won 1 up. Both shot 72 in the morning round to stand all square; Tutwiler birdied the 27th to go ahead, Campbell squared at the 29th, and on the par-3 35th Tutwiler's 30-foot putt died at the rim, giving Campbell a 1-up lead; both bogeyed the 36th (Tutwiler had flown his second over the green into the gallery).
Round of 64, Vernon Novak Jr. v. Deane Beman, 4 & 2. Defending champion Deane Beman lost in the first round to Vernon Novak Jr., a Minnesota miner's son who had carried his own bag through qualifying and succeeded Beman as No. 1 on the University of Maryland team.
Quarterfinal, William C. Campbell v. Dale Morey, won on 19th hole. Campbell beat 1953 finalist Dale Morey on the first extra hole when Morey bunkered a 7-iron second shot.
Quarterfinal, Ed Tutwiler v. William E. Ferrell Jr., won on 20th hole. LSU left-hander Gene Ferrell took Tutwiler to the 20th hole, where Tutwiler sank a 15-footer for a birdie.
