What happened at the 1965 U.S. Amateur

Bob Dickson was penalized four strokes in the second round (two per hole) when an extra wedge, put in his bag in the caddie shop without his knowledge, gave him 15 clubs; he then bogeyed the 71st and 72nd holes to lose by one

Two-time champion Charles Coe led after 54 holes (217) but closed with an 80; the cigar-chomping Murphy closed with a 73

Final round, Bob Murphy v. Bob Dickson, Murphy 291, Dickson 292. Dickson, who had absorbed a four-stroke penalty for carrying 15 clubs (an extra wedge slipped into his bag) in round 2, held the lead late but bogeyed the 17th (drove behind a tree, third over the green) and the 18th (second into a left bunker) to finish one behind Murphy.

No draw: stroke play

From 1965 to 1972 the U.S. Amateur was 72 holes of stroke play, so there is no bracket for 1965.
