What happened at the 1988 Women’s Amateur

Joanne Furby, 19, beat the home-club player Helen Wadsworth 3 and 2 in the morning and English champion Julie Wade 4 and 3 in the afternoon on the same Saturday at Deal.

Julie Wade needed 20 holes to beat Claire Hourihane in the semi-final, her bid to win the English and British titles in the same year ending in the afternoon final.

Final, Joanne Furby v. Julie Wade. Furby, 19, a player left out of England's under-21 side, won 4 and 3 on the same day as her semi-final and dedicated the title to her father, who had suffered a heart attack in April.
